The more than 6,000 cenotes in Yucatán provide refreshment of a different kind. Cenotes are freshwater caves made of limestone, in which, depending on the size of the cave, you can dive, snorkel or bathe. They used to be considered sacred by the ancient Maya and as a gateway to the underworld. Above all, the cenotes provided clean drinking water in the Mayan sites and surrounding villages. One of the most important Maya sites is the world-famous Chichén Itzá, which is now one of the seven new wonders of the world, Uxmal and of course the photogenic Tulum, which towers majestically into the ocean and can be seen on many Instagram photos. But the Maya were not only brilliant in their architecture, but also in their gastronomy. The gastronomy of Yucatan is delicious and very diverse due to the large number of immigrants from different cultures over the past millennia.
